About Otakon
Otakon dates to 1994 and has been held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., since 2017. It runs Friday to Sunday in summer and is organized by volunteers under the nonprofit Otakorp, Inc.; buying a badge makes you a member of that organization. The 2027 edition is scheduled for August 6–8.
For 2026 a full-weekend badge cost $90 to $110 depending on purchase date.
Every prop is inspected by staff or police and must be approved again each year. Metal weapons, metal or wooden sports gear, bokken and functional projectile weapons are banned, and large props and wheeled props are not allowed. The Cosplay Masquerade and a Member Accessibility desk are part of the program.
