About Art Spiegelman

Art Spiegelman is an American cartoonist, editor and comics advocate best known for the graphic novel Maus, about his relationship with his father, a Holocaust survivor. In 1992 it won a special Pulitzer Prize, the first graphic novel to do so.

He began working for Topps in the mid-1960s, co-creating parodies such as Wacky Packages and Garbage Pail Kids. His short experimental work from the 1970s underground scene was collected in Breakdowns in 1977. Pantheon agreed in 1986 to release a collection of the first six chapters of Maus.

With Françoise Mouly he edited eleven issues of Raw from 1980 to 1991. From 1992 he spent a decade as a contributing artist for The New Yorker, and later published In the Shadow of No Towers (2004). In 2022 the National Book Foundation named him the recipient of its Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
