About Akira

Akira is set in the futuristic city of Neo-Tokyo, decades after a mysterious explosion destroyed the old city. Biker gang leader Shotaro Kaneda, the revolutionary Kei, three Espers and Colonel Shikishima try to stop Kaneda's friend Tetsuo Shima from using his unstable telekinetic powers to wreck the city and wake the entity called Akira.

Katsuhiro Otomo serialized it biweekly in Kodansha's Young Magazine from December 1982 to June 1990, and its 120 chapters fill six volumes. Marvel's Epic imprint first published it in the US; Kodansha USA publishes it now.

The story was adapted into an anime film in 1988.
